Academic Programs

As a student in OSU's Department of Animal and Rangeland Sciences, your options are almost as diverse as the resources you'll be trained to manage! Animal and Rangeland Sciences are important to the social, economic, and political development of Oregon, the nation, and the world. As a student you will have numerous opportunities to apply your classroom knowledge to field experiences so you will be prepared to enter the professional arena. We are proud to be able to offer students the benefit of many strong partnerships we have forged through the years with state and federal land use agencies, private industries, nonprofit organizations, as well as a generous welcome and cooperation from numerous private businesses.

 

Undergraduate Degree Programs

We believe student learning is maximized through a combination of multidisciplinary coursework and experiential learning. Students find their niche among the following options within each program. Under the Animal Sciences major, the options that are available but not required are Animal BehaviorAnimal BioHealth/Pre-ProfessionalAnimal Production, Equine, and Rangeland Sciences. Under the Rangeland Sciences major, a student must choose one of the following options: Habitat Management, Pastoral Systems of the World, Sustainable Livestock Ranching, and Sustainable Rangeland Ecosystem Stewardship. Minors in Animal Sciences and Rangeland Sciences are also available.

 

Graduate Degree Programs

Our graduate programs make available research opportunities ranging from applied ecology and management of rangelands to laboratory animals to beef cattle to exotics, like llamas, and from basic research at the systems and molecular level to the management or applied level. Our faculty has received national and international recognition for their research contributions. We offer the following graduate degree programs: MS, PhD.

 

Online Degree Programs

We recognize there is a diverse and talented pool of place-bound students with whom we know could bring great value to our department. We are proud to offer several online courses and programs, one of them, Rangeland Science, is the only program of its kind in the United States. Our online courses and degrees are as rigorous and robust as our campus-based courses; they leverage the latest technology to enhance student learning; and offer a variety of experiential learning opportunities.  More... 

 

Non-Degree Seeking Career Advancement

In recent years an increasing number of students who already hold a degree are looking to earn knowledge, skills, and credits to meet OPM requirements for Federal Agency employment or for career advancement within an NGO. To assist these students in meeting their career goals we offer online courses a la carte.

Experiential Learning

Experiential learning opportunities connect coursework with real life application. These opportunities facilitate a deeper and multi-dimensional understanding of subject-matter knowledge, concepts, and methods. The Department of Animal and Rangeland Sciences offers and supports a spectrum of experiential learning opportunities, including but not limited to: hybrid and field courses, internships, and research. 

 

Clubs & Activities

Student clubs, activities, and academic events offer students channels to socialize and collaborate around a shared interest, compete in regional and national competition, and attend networking events such as conferences and career fairs. Careers

We recognize the primary purpose students go to college is to gain knowledge and skills to embark on a career path.
